Muscat - In a first for Oman, citizens residing abroad would be able to use remote voting system in the elections to the ninth term of Majlis A’Shura.

The voting could be done through a smartphone app, the procedures for which would be announced soon.

According to a statement on the Majlis A’Shura election’s website, the remote voting system is an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Interior to develop the electoral process. “The launch of a remote voting system for citizens outside the sultanate will facilitate as well ease participation in the elections. This has been possible with the use of modern technology.

“The system will be implemented as an application in the smart mobile phones, which will be enhanced by the electronic authentication system provided by Oman’s Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). The ministry will clarify the aspects of the system and its procedures soon,” it said.
