Dubai is studying the feasibility of generating electricity by utilising wind energy in Hatta, state news agency WAM reported on Tuesday.

The study was launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai on Tuesday alongside the inauguration of a 300 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power plant in Dubai.

The plant constitutes the first stage of the 900MW Phase 5 of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

WAM reported that the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has identified the location for a 28MW wind farm in Hatta based on field visits and preliminary wind data.

The report said actual wind speed for a full year is currently being measured at the location to collect data and study technical details in terms of number of turbines, capacity, annual operating hours.

DEWA is building the Gulf region's first hydroelectric power plant in Hatta.

The WAM report also noted that by the end of 2021, clean energy will account for 13.3 percent of Dubai's total energy mix by year-end.

"Commissioning the 300MW first stage of the fifth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park increases DEWA’s total capacity of clean energy to 1,310MW," the report said, quoting Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.

DEWA will operationalise additional 517MW from solar PV and CSP from Phase 4 before the end of the year.
