Ustad Shahid Pervez Khan, the sitar maestro and one of the leading exponents of the etawah gharana, will perform in Dubai on June 20 as part of the summer festivities during Dubai Summer Surprises 2008. Ustad Shahid will be accompanied by Anuradha Pal, known better as the Rhythm Queen and India's first and most talented woman tabla performer.
The concert takes place at Centre Point Theatre, DUCTAC, in Mall of the Emirates and is an official DSS 2008 event. The concert is one among a series of musical shows and events scheduled during 65 days of DSS this year.
Tshering Idnani, Senior Events Coordinator at Dubai Shopping Festival said, "DSS has always hosted some of the best international talents from around the world and featuring high-calibre artists like Ustad Shahid Pervez and Anuradha Pal is our way of not only presenting quality entertainment but is also one among our initiatives to further the understanding between different cultures that Dubai so proudly hosts."
Ustad Shahid Pervez is widely recognized as the one among the greatest sitar players in the world today. He belongs to an illustrious family of musicians spanning seven generations that has also produced some of the most revered figures in Hindustani Classical music. Ustad Shahid was acknowledged as a child prodigy and began performing in public when he was only eight years old.
Trained by Ustad Alla Rakha and Zakir Hussain, Anuradha Pal is renowned for being India's first and only female professional tabla player. Her single minded dedication in mastering the tabla brought her wide acclaim not only in India but around the world. Like Ustad Shahid Pervez, Anuradha began performing when she was barely ten. She is also an essential inclusion in numerous international music festivals.
