Financial crimes top cases before Saudi Public Prosecution

Misappropriation of public funds constituted 25% of cases
Misappropriation of public funds constituted 25 percent of cases handled by the Public Prosecution in the past week with their number reaching 3,970.

Cases related to misuse of drugs and narcotics came second with 24 percent or 3,705 cases.

Attack on honor and morality represented 21 percent of cases while physical assaults accounted for 20 percent.

“During the past three weeks the ratio of cases related to embezzlement of public funds and drug abuse was almost the same,” Al-Hayat Arabic daily reported.

In the first week (Rabiul Thani 26 to Jamad Al-Awwal 3), the department received 3,474 cases, with the Riyadh region reporting the largest number of cases.

Makkah province had the second largest number of cases related to misappropriation of public funds, followed by the Eastern Province with 12 percent cases, the paper said.

The proportion of the cases was almost the same in the second week (Jamad Al-Awwal 4 to 10), but the number of cases in the week that followed differed slightly.

However, the measures taken by the department’s officials in different parts of the Kingdom varied from one branch to another. It adopted nearly 90 measures to deal with these cases in the final days of the last Hijri month and in the beginning of the current month.

During the next week it took more than 105 measures while in the third week more than 111 measures were adopted, the paper pointed out quoting an official report.

The department warned against the misappropriation of public funds or that of public, personal or corporate institutions that manage public facilities or provide public services or funds of shareholding companies, banks and other institutions.

“These are big crimes and the people involved will be detained for investigation and prosecution,” the department said.

Lawyer Ahmed Al-Muhaimeed expressed his concern over the growing number of cases related to embezzlement of public funds and abuse of drugs and narcotics.

“The number of such cases was almost the same in the three weeks, although there were differences in measures taken by the department,” he said.

“I have noticed speedy action taken by the prosecution to prevent misappropriation of public funds and this is a positive development that we have not seen in the past,” Al-Muhaimeed told Al-Hayat.

He attributed the increasing cases of attack on honor and morality to family conflicts, difficulties of individuals, a lack of family awareness and dismemberment of families.

“I used to receive more than 15 cases related to family conflicts every day. The main reason for these cases is the absence of family supervision on social media networks,” he added.
