Muscat - The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has refuted rumours that the two-year re-entry ban on expatriate workers, from the date of cancellation of their present sponsorship, has been lifted, saying they are baseless news being spread by cyber criminals.

"We have no idea about the origin of the news that is taking rounds today on various social media outlets that the 2-year re-entry ban has been lifted. And it is not true that the prevailing re-entry ban is lifted", an official clarified.

Since Thursday morning, there has been a flurry of inquiries seeking clarification on the present news being circulated online and in social media that the 2-year ban, which came into effect some two years ago has been lifted.

Upon investigation, it has been found that the story that appeared in an international newspaper some ten years back has been picked by a cyber-offender and circulated among his friends which went like a wild-fire later.

The ROP further reiterated its earlier warning of spreading canards as a criminal offence and urged the general public to refrain from forwarding such baseless and unfounded news or any information whose authenticity is not clear.

Any expatriate who quits work and gets his visa cancelled will have a 2-year no entry to the country by the immigration authorities since July, 2014. They will not be issued an employment visa before the completion of two years from the date of last departure after leaving a company and this is in accordance with the requirements of the expatriates Residency Law.

Later, the Ministry of Manpower extended the same by another six months on employing expatriate construction workers and housekeeping staff in the private sector.

However, this ban is not applicable to the small and medium startups as means to support the local youth.
