The University of Birmingham Dubai has announced new degree and postgraduate courses in business, education, sport and computing as preparations continue apace to open its iconic new campus this year.

Nine new courses will mark the University’s move to the state-of-the-art campus, due to open in September, which will provide an academic home for 2,900 students, with a student experience like no other in Dubai.

Licenced by the UAE Ministry of Education, the University already delivers a range of fully accredited courses in Dubai and - from September - will offer the following new courses, subject to accreditation:

  • BSc Business Management with Economics
  • BSc Business Management with Finance
  • BSc Business Management with Psychology
  • BSc Psychology with Business Management
  • MA Education Leadership
  • MA Teaching Studies
  • MSc Physical Education and Wellbeing
  • MSc Sport Coaching
  • MSc Artificial Intelligence & Computer Science

The University recently marked rapid and sustained progress on the construction of its new campus buildings as the project ‘topped out’ at its highest point.

Designed to reflect real-world working practices, the new campus will encourage students to carry out research in interdisciplinary teams across all academic subjects. Flexible study spaces will ensure students have a learning environment suited to their needs; whether in large lecture theatres and laboratories or smaller seminar and tutorial rooms.

The buildings have been uniquely designed as an ‘Intelligent Campus’ - embedded with flexible, cutting-edge technology allowing innovative, multidisciplinary teaching. Smart sensors across teaching spaces will map people flows - allowing the most efficient use of the buildings. Students will be able to structure their time on campus through dedicated mobile apps and smart scheduling. ‘Express Check-in’ facilities will allow campus visitors to make the best use of their time.

Inspired by the historic Aston Webb buildings on the Birmingham campus, the facilities will use shaded open-air courtyard spaces to create an enjoyable and productive student experience. The buildings will sit next to lush parkland offering sports pitches and an open-air event space, whilst new student accommodation is a short walk away, across the parkland.

University of Birmingham Dubai Provost, Professor David Sadler, said: “Everyone – staff and students alike – is eagerly looking forward to moving into our brand-new, bespoke campus building later this year. We believe that, in our new academic home, we will deliver an educational experience like no other in Dubai.

“Our new courses broaden the range of exceptional educational opportunities we can offer to students in Dubai. We continue to work hard in developing our campus as an all-round university experience of the highest quality.”

The University has also strengthened its leadership team, with recently-appointed Provost Professor David Sadler joined by Programme Directors for both the BSc Psychology programme and the BSc Business Management programme.

Dr Anthony Murphy has a strong background in forensic and clinical forensic psychology, having published research papers on policing and investigation of violent crimes. He has taught at the University of West London and Kings College London, joining the University of Birmingham Dubai from Middlesex University Dubai.

Dr Mohamed Haffar has joined the team to lead the highest ranked business programme in Dubai (QS World Rankings 2020). He brings many years of experience to the University and a particular interest in Globalisation, Organisational Behaviour and Change Management.

Professor Sadler added: “Anthony and Mohamed are highly-qualified academics, who bring a great deal of experience to an already strong team of talented, dedicated academics and a vibrant student community who all share the University’s commitment to providing the best possible learning experience for our students.

These leadership appointments – including that of Professor Sadler – further help the University to support the UAE Government’s National Agenda and the new Inclusive Education Policy Framework for schools; contributing to the quality of education and employability in the UAE and wider Gulf region.

As the first global top 100 and UK Russell Group university to establish a campus in Dubai, The University of Birmingham Dubai delivers the highest-quality education underpinned by a growing research focus in a leading global educational hub.
