44 new Covid-19 cases registered in Bahrain

MANAMA: Forty-four new cases of Covid-19 were registered in Bahrain yesterday, bringing the number of active cases to 1,011.

Of yesterday’s new cases, 22 of them were among Bahrainis who returned from Iran as part of the government’s evacuation plan.

While 10 cases are among individuals who have come in contact with positive cases and only two of yesterday’s new cases involve migrant workers, while 10 were unspecified.

Isolation

Twenty-three more people yesterday left isolation and treatment facilities, taking the total number of recoveries to 726. This means Bahrain has registered a total of 1,744 Covid-19 cases since February 24, including 1,011 active cases, 726 recoveries and seven deaths.

According to the Health Ministry’s statistics, three of the active cases still remain in critical condition while the rest are stable.

Additionally, 56 more people left precautionary quarantine facilities yesterday, after completing the required 14 days. Laboratory tests of these individuals showed negative clearing them of infection.

This takes the total number of people to leave the quarantine facilities to 1,274.

Meanwhile, the ministry yesterday updated contact tracing details for 255 cases on its website dedicated to the coronavirus.

The majority are migrant workers from labour accommodations in Hidd, Eker, Ras Zuwayed, Naim and Al Hassy.

They include 125 Indians, 57 Bangladeshis, 27 Nepalis and 11 Pakistanis.

There are also 30 Bahrainis on the updated list, of which 15 were evacuated from Iran as part of the government’s International Covid-19 Repatriation Programme (ICRP).

This includes a one-year-old baby girl (case 763) who returned to the country on April 6. Three Bahrainis (case 832, case 696 and case 765) were also linked to the Jannusan Ma’tam, with all of them contracting the virus from case 460, a 44-year-old male who attended the condolence meeting at the ma’tam between March 9 and 12.

A 34-year-old Bahraini is the only citizen on the list who contracted the virus from foreign workers in Al Hassy area. The others developed symptoms locally or arrived from abroad.

Details of a 34-year-old Lebanese hairdresser (case 829) were also added to the list, with contact tracing underway.

Other positive cases featured on the list are a 42-year-old Thai woman who arrived from Oman, a 32-year-old British man, a 34-year-old American man, and a 22-year-old Jordanian woman.

The total number of people tested for the coronavirus in Bahrain has reached 79,612 so far.

Meanwhile, the GDN has learned that the only private isolation facility for Covid-19 patients will treat Bahrainis for free.

The Park Regis Lotus Hotel in Juffair was turned into a treatment centre for positive patients and is run in collaboration with the Middle East Hospital.

It was a paid treatment facility, but hotel owner and businessman Varghese Kurian told the GDN that it will be used to treat Bahraini patients for free from today onwards.

“The government will use the hotel to treat Bahrainis (for free),” he said last night.

A number of other hotels have been turned into quarantine facilities in association with other private hospitals, which remain paid facilities.

The GDN reported last month that the move in collaboration with the private healthcare sector offered the public a choice between free government and paid hotel accommodations with all guidelines to be followed.
