Addressing a Press conference on Thursday at Dubai Officers Club, Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council and assistant commander-in-chief for Operations at the Dubai Police, launched the Ministry of Interior's first unified traffic campaign, titled 'Don't let speeding turn you into a killer'.
He said the campaign is organised by the Federal Traffic Council under the directives from Lt.-Gen. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, with the aim to minimise the number of fatal accidents.
He said despite the decrease in number of road fatalties, the police authorities will make all efforts to achieve the goal of making the UAE the safest country in the world.
Quoting the statistics, Maj Gen Al Zafeen said 1,535 accidents happened in 2017 due to speeding, which caused deaths 230 people of various nationalities in the UAE, against 312 deaths caused by 1,787 accidents occurred in 2016.
He added that in 2017, police authorities across the country recorded 7.727 million speed violations compared to the same period of 2016, in which they recorded 8.606 million speed violations. A total of 525 people died in various types of traffic accidents in 2017 compared to 2016 which saw the death of 706 caused by various types of traffic accidents.
Maj-Gen Al Zafeen said the police authorities in all the emirates, in coordination with the community members, will address the issue of speeding during the campaign. The campaign will be carried out in all the emirates to make efforts to reduce the number of accidents and achieving the target of bringing down road fatalities to one death for every 100,000 people.
The campaign will be carried out by the ministry's traffic council which play great role in developing the traffic system in the country. "The main priority and concern of our wise leadership is to achieve happiness by ensuring safety and security to community members," he added.
The three month-long campaign would focus on enhancing the behaviour of motorists and spreading the traffic culture by distributing brochures and publications to the public in various parts of the country, using social media and means of media to educate people about the dangers of speeding violations.
Police authorities also will set up awareness tents and organise exhibitions that display picture of horrific accidents caused by speed violations.
