Iraq has unveiled a new master plan for the development of its capital Baghdad until 2030, comprising the elevated metro, houses and other major projects.

The official daily Al-Sabah said on Thursday that the Baghdad Municipality has completed a "comprehensive development scheme" for the capital city and would soon present it to the cabinet for approval.

"The plan comprises many strategic projects including the Baghdad Elevated Metro (BET), other rail networks, roads, housing complexes and other projects," it said, quoting Ahmed Al-Hashmi, assistant director of the Designs Division at the Municipality.

He revealed that the Metro and other key projects, including 15 housing complexes, would be launched in 2021.

In October, Zawya Projects reported, quoting local press, that Iraq had shortlisted consultancy companies for BET.

Officials have said in the past that the metro project would cost around $2.5 billion.
