Veolia Water Technologies Saudi Arabia is proud to announce its latest contract with Saudi Bio-Acids Company, which will see Veolia design and build full turnkey wastewater treatment plants for new Greenfield factory in Jeddah industrial area. The plants will integrate several of Veolia’s innovative technologies – including the Biothane® Advanced EGSB Anaerobic, Membrane Bioreactor (MBR), as well as tertiary treatments using Reverse Osmosis technology.

Saudi Bio-Acids Company aims at building the Arab World's first Citric Acid production facility. The company is targeting a production output of 80,000 metric tons within two years for three different products (Critic Acid Anhydrous (CCA), Critic Acid Monohydrate (CAM) and Tri Sodium Citrate (TSC) after commencing operations at the plant. Citric acid is used in many industries that range from food and beverage to pharmaceuticals and personal care. Currently, most of the demand for citric acid across the Middle East is met with imports from overseas. With this plant, Saudi Arabia will start producing this important component for the food industry directly in the Kingdom.

Due to the nature of the Food & Beverage industry, wastewater generated from processing operations contains high concentrations of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and suspended solids. To mitigate Saudi Bio-Acids’ wastewater challenges, this project features Veolia’s high-performing anaerobic reactor, the Biothane® Advanced EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) which is an extremely compact, high-performance anaerobic treatment process for industrial effluents. This anaerobic innovation uses less energy and chemicals, occupies less space and incurs lower sludge handing costs, when compared to aerobic alternatives.

In addition, the compact solution supports biogas production, which serves as an alternate energy source, maximizing renewable energy utilization for Saudi Bio-Acids’ factory. Dr. Badr Ghawji, Managing Director, Veolia Water Technologies in Saudi, concluded: “As a leading global provider of innovative water and wastewater solutions, Veolia’s knowledge of local discharge limits has benefitted our clients, whom have had to mitigate wastewater challenges in an increasingly environmentally conscious market. Our suite of water and wastewater solutions offers maximum technical advantages for our clients, and we look forward to recommending our anaerobic technologies to more Food & Beverage manufacturers operating in this region.”
