Abu Dhabi: The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) yesterday organised a lecture focused on celebrating the life and legacy of the Poet Ghazi Al Gosaibi, as part of DCT Abu Dhabi’s Poetry Encyclopedia activities. The event was hosted at Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF), taking place between 24-30 April at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).
The late Ghazi Abdul Rahman Al Gosaibi had an eventful life, fulfilling many roles in his native Saudi Arabia - politician, diplomat, technocrat, poet, and novelist. Al Gosaibi was one of the best-selling writers in the Arab world, and a significant diplomat-poet. He published nearly 40 books, most of which were the collections of his poems, which evoke images of a simpler, desert culture and demonstrate his mastery of the written word.
Participants in the lecture discussed Al Gosaibi’s life, his literary journey as well as his most important poems. Part of the session highlighted his time in Bahrain, a significant period in his life that saw him serving as the ambassador to the country from 1984 – 1992.
The creative and cultural aspects of Al Gosaibi’s career were discussed, including his masterful writing style, the diversity and variety of his work, the enduring fascination for his poems in the Arab world and beyond, and the deep impact of his words in the hearts and minds of readers. Participants noted that his work transcended the page, as numerous renowned singers have adapted his poems into song.
The lecture was attended by Dr. Mohammed Al Masoudi, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Saudi Cultural Attache at the Saudi Embassy in the UAE and a columnist at Al Riyadh newspaper. Also in attendance were renowned Emirati poet Abdul Karim Matouk and Abdullah Yateem, an academic scholar at the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research, as well as an anthropology and history lecturer at Bahrain University. The session also saw the participation of Emirati poet Shaikha Al Mutairi, a diploma holder in Grammar and Syntax from the College of Islamic and Arabic Studies.
DCT Abu Dhabi’s Poetry Encyclopaedia is an electronic portal containing more than 3,090 collections of Arab poetry. Through this portal, readers can experience a rich database of early Arab poetry on an innovative platform that offers a flexible and interactive reading experience.
