The Licensing Agency at Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) raised more than Dh12 million from its first auction of distinguished number plates open auction in 2010.

The 66th distinguished numbers plates auction comprised a total of 97 distinguished numbers plates, including 87 for vehicles and 10 for motorcycles.

Mohammad Abdul Karim Nimat, Director of the Vehicles Licensing Department at RTA Licensing Agency, said gross proceeds of the auction were Dh12m and the plate (G 44) topped the sales list selling for Dh1.8m, which witnessed a huge number of participants.

He said the number plate (E 32) sold for Dh1.12m, followed by (H 666) which was sold for Dh720,000. Motorbike number plate (11110) was sold for Dh21,000.

Nimat said 97 plates that were sold in the auction included two two-digit plates, 20 three-digit plates, 29 four-digit plates and 36 five-digit plates. For motorbikes, number plates totalled 10, including one three-digit plate, three four-digit plates, three four-digit plates and six five-digit plates.

"The auction witnessed a heated competition among the 400 plus bidders. Bidders hailed from various sections of the community and nationalities, which reflects a strong relevance and continuing success of number plate auctions," said Nimat.

"Proper and early preparations of the venue and auctioneer company contributed to the success of the event," he said.

Online taxi booking launched
RTA's Public Transport Agency, which oversees the taxi sector in Dubai, has recently launched Online Taxi Booking service, known as e-Taxi. A taxi can be booked anytime through the link http://rta.ae/etaxi. The service is currently available only for hotels. The service would be available to the public by the end of this year, an official said.
