JEDDAH: Demand for domestic business travel is on the rise in the Kingdom despite slight concerns in the region about the impact of lower oil prices on commercial activity, aviation industry leaders told Arab News on Wednesday.

Their optimism came as Saudi Arabian Airlines Director-General Saleh N. Al-Jasser announced the launch of Albayraq's services between Jeddah and Riyadh from June 1.

"Albayraq service is an expansion of the airline's strategy 2020 and the airline will take special care of its passengers at its Saudia Private Aviation's VIP lounges in Riyadh and Jeddah," said Al-Jasser.

The Albayraq service has been developed to serve VIPs and businessmen who frequently fly between Riyadh and Jeddah.

Bookings have already opened for the new service, Al-Jasser told Arab News during a special preview of Albayraq's facilities at the Saudia Private Aviation terminal in Jeddah.

Faisal Ghazi Kayal, managing director of Saudia Private Aviation, said he saw a great scope for the new service because the Jeddah-Riyadh sector is one of the major passenger growth areas in the world. Saudi carriers transport over 4,000 passengers daily each way, he added.

"We are very optimistic about this booming sector," he told Arab News. "The service will cater to individuals, corporate and government clients, who require either annual daily blocked or ad hoc seats."

Albayraq's two new Airbus A319 aircraft have already arrived from Lufthansa Technik AG, Hamburg, Germany, facility and the third plane is on its way, he said.

Each plane can carry up to 50 passengers and a Jeddah-Riyadh-Jeddah round trip would cost SR4,500. One way, the fare will be SR2,500.

More than 200,000 seats per year will be available on this service, Kayal said. There will be six daily scheduled flights between Riyadh and Jeddah each way, starting from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., a flight every 3 hours.

Kayal said Saudia Private Aviation has already signed a contract with Saudia Catering to provide signature cuisine to the Albayraq travelers.
