The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed 60% of the works of the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in Al Mearad and Southwest Muaither – Package 6.

The project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.

Ashghal announced Tuesday in a statement that over 50% of the roads planned for development are now open for traffic.

Engineer Fahad Mohamed al-Otaibi, head of West Areas Section at the Roads Projects Department, said the project is part of a development plan for the areas of Al-Mearad and Southwest of Muaither, which is made up of a total of five packages.

“Package 6 of the project will serve, upon completion, a total of 853 plots, providing a network of internal roads and infrastructure networks to meet the needs of population expansion in the area,” he said. “It will bring many benefits in terms of enhancing traffic flow and easing congestion while facilitating movement to and from Southwest Muaither and developing the quality of infrastructure services.”

“This is in addition to reducing the groundwater level in the area,” al-Otaibi added.

Before commencement of works, the geographical scope of the project was divided into four phases to minimise inconvenience to residents.

The works include an integrated roads network with a total length of 30km, as many as 1,185 street lighting poles, directional signs and road signs, and 10,000 car parking lots.

Pedestrian and bicycle paths of 6km will be provided, and landscaping works and green spaces implemented on an area covering about 37,455sq m.

The infrastructure development works include the construction of a total of 18km of sewage network, 28km of surface, groundwater and stormwater drainage network, and 14km of TSE (treated sewage effluent) network.

Works are currently underway to complete the laying of rainwater TSE network lines as well as micro-tunneling works.

All project works are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023.

So far 55% of the total roads have been developed and opened for traffic, 60% of the sewage network has been completed, as have 66% of the treated water network used for irrigation and 80% of the rainwater drainage network work.

As much as 85% of the total materials and elements used, including drainage and water pipes, lighting lamps and poles, traffic light poles are locally produced.
