Extra support for SAN and single-instance databases makes database consolidation even more dynamic

Dubai, UAE, February 19, 2008: The second-generation of FlexFrame for Oracle, introduced by Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT company, adds extra functionality in line with demands from customers using the dynamic IT infrastructure platform as a highly scalable Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based database and application server solution.

Developed in partnership by Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Oracle, new features of FlexFrame for Oracle V2.0A include support for non-clustered Oracle Databases - bringing the pre-integrated solution within reach of smaller organizations running databases on limited numbers of nodes - and enhanced speed due to the introduction of direct access to databases files in SAN (storage area network) storage systems. Pre-integration assures swift utilization of the latest technology. Thanks to its complete services offering, Fujitsu Siemens Computers provides customers with all-round service support regarding the FlexFrame for Oracle solution.

This direct access to SAN-based database files dramatically increases throughput speed between the server and database through offloading storage processing requirements from the server pool, while dynamic LUN (logical unit number) masking protects the integrity of databases in shared storage by restricting operational access. The higher system utilization offered by FlexFrame for Oracle V2.0A increases return on server investment and can lead to savings of up to 50 percent by reducing server and system sizes, as well as offering lowered administration and maintenance costs.

Chandan Mehta, Product Manager for Enterprise Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, says: "The introduction of FlexFrame for Oracle provided customers with a perfect entry point to enjoy the benefit of SOA-based environments. Now in Version 2.0A we are introducing the enhancements that were asked for most by our customers."

He adds: "The fully-virtualized software stack and dynamic resource provisioning at the heart of FlexFrame for Oracle combine to provide the highest levels of system availability and flexibility, extended by new functionality such as direct access to SAN-based database files. The system also responds rapidly to changing levels of demand, providing the highest-possible levels of usability for database applications."

FlexFrame for Oracle has been jointly developed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Oracle for the particular needs of organizations operating business critical applications in zero downtime environments, where optimum availability and the most-effective use of system resources are required. As the industry's first end-to-end infrastructure solution for Oracle grid computing, the Linux-based solution runs on PRIMERGY blade servers, controlled and managed by the FlexFrame for Oracle Control Center, and based on the Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Real Application Clusters as well as single instances of Oracle9i Database and Oracle Database 10g.

The addition of support for single-instance databases means that FlexFrame for Oracle V2.0A is a great starting point for small and medium-size business (SMB) customers to begin implementing a Service-Oriented Infrastructure (SOI) based on Oracle SOA Suite, a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware. The new version of FlexFrame for Oracle means that customers can begin the consolidation of their server environment, while still using existing single-instance Oracle Databases.

Oracle Vice President, Server Technologies, Amlan Debnath, said: "With FlexFrame for Oracle, Fujitsu Siemens Computers provides the ideal platform for Service Oriented Architectures based on Oracle Fusion Middleware and delivers a perfect consolidation platform for Oracle grid computing environments. As a Service Oriented Infrastructure, FlexFrame for Oracle offers the potential to reduce operational costs and to improve the availability and performance of Oracle services."

Available immediately across the EMEA region, FlexFrame for Oracle V2.0A implementations are built to match customer needs by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The FlexFrame for Oracle solution features a wide range of PRIMERGY blade servers with Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron processors. Additionally, with SolutionContract a packaged service is available with which Fujitsu Siemens Computers maintains and supports FlexFrame for Oracle V2.0A comprehensively.
