Eteach International urges British schools to get ready for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs)
Dubai - Due to a shortage of qualified experienced teachers, British schools in Dubai are now enlisting Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) to ensure a ready supply of talent for the future, according to Eteach International, the region's only online recruitment service dedicated to the education profession.
According to Jonathan Price, the organisation's Managing Director, NQTs can be a school's greatest asset, if managed correctly. "NQTs are energetic and ambitious and can easily adapt to new teaching styles and procedures. Good mentorship and training can help to attract and retain teachers, ensuring that the first two years provide a professional foundation for growth."
Any school in Dubai can employ an NQT, but if the school has been accredited by the British Schools Overseas (BSO), the teacher can receive Qualified Teacher (QT) status after working for two years. With this designation, teachers can seek positions elsewhere in the region or back in the UK, if desired.
To attain BSO accreditation, schools need to undergo inspection that aligns with the UK's Department for Education (DfE) standards and is monitored and carried out by an Ofsted* certified organisation. In Dubai, in particular, schools can seekBSO status fromthe Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA)who conducta programme of regular inspections on schools, through CfBT Education Trustto attain BSO accreditation.
With the vast majority of schools in the region having achieved BSO accreditation, a number of teaching opportunities are readily available to NQTs.
Commenting on key areas to consider when employing NQTs, Price said: "Schools must put an NQT training programme in place witha mentoring structure that supports the development of teachers.
"The mentor should then develop and administer training guidelines with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)to aid the NQTs in both professional and personal development. Lastly, mentors should evaluate NQTs on a regular basis to ensure training schemes and KPIs are on track and that any issues can be addressed."
Further, a well-organised NQT training programme benefits a school's education profile, enablingstaff at all levels to evolve and grow, while making the school a sought-after place for teachers to develop their careers.
