MUSCAT The joint International Workshop on Mathematics entitled "New Developments in Number Theory and in Applied Mathematics" to be held from 18-22 February at The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) and at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) was announced by professors from both universities on Tuesday afternoon.
The International Workshop on Mathematics is sponsored by SQU, GUtech, The Research Council (TRC) and the scientific section of the German printing house Springer. During the five-day Workshop around 37 international experts in number theory and recognized researchers of applied fields in Mathematics will give presentations about their latest research results.
"With this conference, we wish to create enthusiasm for Mathematics and inspire the young generation in Oman who is interested in Mathematics and in sciences," said Professor Dr. Bernhard Heim, expert in number theory and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Science at GUtech. Prof. Heim is the main organizer of the conference along with Professors from SQU, Associate Professor Mohammed Al-Lawati, Head of Department of Mathematics and Statistics of SQU and Associate Professor Dr. Mehiddin Al-Baali of SQU. "The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of SQU has been organizing conferences and workshops on a number of topics, but this will be the first workshop in number theory and the first joint workshop with GUtech," said Professor Dr. Mohammed Al-Lawati, Head of the Department of Mathematics of SQU.
"We are very glad to organize the Workshop on Mathematics along with SQU. The knowledge in sciences is changing rapidly. Therefore such conferences are important to update and exchange ideas. Many fields such as weather forecasts or computer tomography are based on Mathematics. To create fascination for Mathematics is very important, already at an early age at school," said Professor Dr. Burkhard Rauhut, Rector of GUtech.
"The number theory, which will be the main topic of the upcoming conference, is one of the most important areas of modern science in Mathematics, it is the core of modern Mathematics taught at all universities around the world. In our every-day lives we are surrounded by numbers - all secret codes, IT systems, phone applications, are all based on number theories," said Professor Heim.
One of the main goals of the conference is to bring international renowned experts from Japan, Germany, France, India, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Russia, Turkey and Oman together and to create a possibility for local professors and students to learn from their expertise and to start international cooperation in sciences and especially in Mathematics. "With this conference and through the direct contact with international researchers, we would like to enhance and also stimulate research activities in Mathematics in the Sultanate of Oman," said Prof. Bernhard Heim who has been working for the famous Max Plank Institute in Germany prior to his post at GUtech.
"We are looking forward to sponsor such an important International Workshop on Mathematics, where a number of experts from all over the world will come together and exchange their expertise in a basic science field that is very valuable for Oman," said Dr. Talal Al-Balushi, Director for International Relations of The Research Council.
The Workshop will have very specific presentations on Mathematics but as well presentations of GUtech and SQU students regarding sciences in general and presentations related to E-learning at GUtech. "Around 70 per cent of the conference will be scientific presentations. We want to create a platform for international research exchange in Mathematics," said Professor Heim.
The conference will be open for Mathematics professors, interested university students and Mathematics teachers but as well for the general public, interested in Mathematics. A Soduku for the general public will be held on Sunday, 19 January at the GUtech Airport Campus. Entry will be free of charge.
