- Star acrobatic pilot Nicolas Ivanoff inputs into watch design -

The new Khaki X-Wind Automatic by Hamilton guarantees that its wearer keeps right on track. This stylish chronometer may turn heads - but thanks to its clever, integrated navigation feature, deviations are off the agenda. The Khaki X-Wind Automatic is the world's first drift-angle calculator in a watch, enabling pilots to accurately calculate and record the crosswinds they will encounter on their planned journey. And for those needing to navigate their way through life on the ground, this new Hamilton timepiece is also the perfect co-pilot.

Nicolas Ivanoff, one of the world's leading acrobatic pilots and participant in the Red Bull Air Race Series, with his experience of a pilot's technical needs for a watch, contributed in developing the new Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Automatic. With Hamilton as his official partner, he competed in the recently concluded Red Bull Air Race in Abu Dhabi where he took fifth-place.

"Hamilton are known for their innovative design and watch technology. Our design team has enjoyed working with Nicolas' and using his expertise and experience to develop this great timepiece. The watch is sure to be a hit with pilots and watch lovers alike." said Matthias Breschan, president of Hamilton, in Switzerland.

The Khaki X-Wind Automatic has a sporty, high-tech design and is 44mm in diameter for easy visibility in all senses. The distinctive chrono comes with a choice of a black or silver-colored dial and has an easy-to-read display.  In order to foster the adventurous aviation spirit, Hamilton has created two new interpretations of "looping" on this latest addition to its Khaki series. The Khaki X-Wind Automatic has a brown stitched leather strap with an extension that allows the watch to be worn over a bulky flying jacket and a fixed loop on the strap ensures that the watch stays in place.  A double buckle in the shape of an "H" adds extra security. The Khaki X-Wind Automatic is also available with a black, stitched rubber strap. The adventurer character is underlined by water resistance to 100 m and a sapphire crystal.

Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, PA, USA. Hamilton is a member of the Swatch Group, the world's largest watch producer and distributor, with 157 production sites in Switzerland. The Swatch Group is the official timekeeper and data-handling operator for the Olympic Games in Athens, Turin, Beijing and other cities.

NAVIGATIONAL NOTES
The starting point for the crosswind calculation is the rotation of the external turning bezel to mark the wind direction and real speed of the aircraft or sea vessel - for example 180 mph. Following this, key information is sourced from the map or control tower - the difference between the geographic and magnetic poles plus the wind speed and direction on the journey.  Referring to either the nomograph engraved on the reverse of the watch, or the one on the small card supplied with it, the pilot subtracts the difference between the poles e.g. 30? from the 90? line marked on the nomograph. From the resultant 60? point on the arc the navigator traces the curved line until it crosses the speed curve - in this example at 40 mph. This last figure is split by creating a right-angle going down to the horizontal scale which the line in this example touches this at 20 mph.

By adding the resultant 20 mph to the vessel's actual speed of 180 mph the navigator obtains a figure of 200 that he or she sets on the outer bezel using s second crown and consequently relates to the corresponding figure on the inner bezel, here 6.5. This last figure is the crosswind component. The final step is to add the crosswind component to the magnetic heading - 6.5 + 130 = 136.5. The pilot then selects 136? on the inner bezel to remind him that this is the direction to take in order to reach the desired destination directly.

The Khaki X Wind Automatic and the Hamilton collection can be found at select Rivoli outlets across the UAE.
