Trademark Challenges Highlighted
Trademarks today are considered one of the most valuable business tools therefore it's vital for the business community to identify and examine important trends and issues related to brand security and management as well as the intellectual property rights and protection. To this effect, the Better Business Desk of Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry organised a seminar, Trade Marks: Emerging Issues and Challenges at the Chamber's Conference Hall yesterday (Tuesday).
Held in association with Al Tamimi & Co Advocates and Legal Consultants, the seminar towed the line of Dubai Chamber's mission of providing its members with quality services, useful information and best business practices which introduces them to the latest trends in the business world besides helping them out in the improvement of their business style.
The seminar was presided over by HE Hisham Al Shirawi, Vice Treasurer and Board Member, Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry, who said: "At Dubai Chamber, we always endeavour to serve and educate all our stakeholders and the business community by introducing them to the latest in world economy and by providing them with the best quality and value-added services and facilities, whether they happen to be the Chamber's over 100,000 members, or its thousands of overseas trading partners."
Added Al Shirawi, "In line with its vision of protecting the interests of members and businessmen, Dubai Chamber stresses on the importance of utilising all means that help securing and safeguarding the businessmen's trade marks as they are today one of the most valuable business assets."
British national Mrs Hoda Barakat, who is the Managing Partner and Head of Intellectual Property/Information Technology Department of Al Tamimi, apprised the gathering of trademark owners, business groups and councils, lawyers and legal consultants and Government officials about the latest trends in the area of trademarks through her presentation on "Breakthroughs in Trade Marks and Law Practice."
Ms. Jehad Kazim, Manager, Better Business Desk said, "Most countries today have laws that enable the brand owners to claim the title of their brands as many companies have already taken the first step towards branding by articulating a vision statement and philosophy aimed at building a corporate identity". Kazim stressed that "Many companies spend millions of dirhams to build and protect their corporate identities. Trade mark ownership and management are the most important aspects that you need to be aware of when dealing with Trade Marks".Mr. Omar Obeidat, Partner and senior legal consultant at Al Tamimi, highlighted the topic of Challenging Areas in Trade Marks which focused on the various issues facing the realm of trademarks for the business community and how to tackle the problem in its face.
The seminar also identified and examined other important trends and issues related to trade marks such as registration of colour marks, trade mark rights, GCC trade marks law, liability in trade mark suits, cancellation of trade marks and inevitable conflict between trade marks and trade names.
