UAE - Heating plastic-wrapped food in the microwave could be harmful to your health, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (Adafsa) has warned.

Chemicals in this type of plastic, it said, might leak into the food when heated. It also cautioned against using aluminum foils in baking food in ovens.

The warning was part of the authority's new social media campaign on food safety, according to a local media report.

In the awareness drive it launched, Adafsa also reminded the public to consume products before their expiration date and store food items in cool and dry areas, away from direct sunlight.

In keeping food in the fridge, ensure that it is properly sealed and covered, it added. Hot or warm food must not be placed in the refrigerator, while defrosted ones should not be frozen again.

The authority then stressed that chemicals and cleaning products must be stored away from any food item.
