MANAMA: All medics, including visiting doctors, could be forced to get insurance against medical errors under a proposed amendment.

The amendment to the 1989 Human Medicine and Dentistry Law would see all medics in the private and government sectors insured against errors with compensations by insurance companies made to those affected.

The proposed amendment, presented online by five MPs led by Hamad Al Kooheji, comes as many go through a lengthy process before getting compensated for errors against them or their family member/s.

Establishments would have every right to seek payments from a visiting doctor if they are forced to pay for errors caused by them.

“People affected by medical errors are already suffering from what has occurred against them and they have to further wait for compensations through settlements or court orders that may take months if not years,” Mr Al Kooheji told the GDN.

“The amendments ensure smoother approach to the process of how medical errors would be dealt with.”
