UAE - As many as 1,024 motorists of different nationalities, mostly Asians, were fined in the last three months by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Sharjah for turning their private vehicles into taxis.

A total of 758 motorists were also nabbed in the first three months of this year, according Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, director of transport affairs, RTA Sharjah. "The 1,024 violations registered include 407 in June, 192 in July, and 425 in August."

These covered most of the areas of the Sharjah city and central region of the emirate, he added. "These areas were closely monitored by 20 inspectors who managed to nab 1,024 illegal taxi drivers."

More inspectors will be deployed at hot spots like workers' accommodations, markets, and industrial areas, he stated. "A Dh5,000 fine will be slapped against the erring driver in the first time," he warned. "The fine shall be doubled to Dh10,000 in case of repetition, while the violation reported in the driver's absentia shall draw a fine of Dh10,000."
