Enhancing Bahrain’s food security in the face of the global climate change is one of the underlying themes of the kingdom’s most popular Farmers’ Market, according to a top minister.

During his visit to the Budaiya Botanical Garden yesterday, Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf noted that the market celebrated diverse food systems as a source of sustainability. He stressed the importance of maintaining fresh food supply chains in the face of the global pandemic, while noting the relationship between health and increased consumption of fruit and vegetables.

The minister also renewed the government’s commitment to support Bahraini farmers and their efforts to utilise modern agricultural technologies in product processes, in addition to help market their products.

Bahraini farmers and gardeners are already seeing the impact of climate change which has resulted in global temperatures rising by an average of 1C.Dr Salah Musameh, owner of Danyah Nursery, which specialises in grafted trees, revealed that more and more trees have been dying during hotter summers.“

Although the Covid-19 pandemic has renewed Bahrainis’ interest in gardening at home, unfortunately, we have seen more of our trees not survive the summer,” the 59-year-old owner of the nursery, located in Hamad Town, said.
