ISTANBUL, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The Turkish lira was trading at 6.4700 to the dollar early on Wednesday, weakening from the previous day's close of 6.3577 on concerns over strained ties between Turkey and the United States.

The lira TRYTOM=D3 has lost more than 40 percent this year and crashed to an all-time low of 7.24 to the dollar on Monday, hit by worries over Erdogan's calls for lower borrowing costs and by worsening ties with the United States, a major NATO ally.

Turkey sharply raised tariffs on some goods imported from the United States, including cars, alcohol and tobacco, the country's Official Gazette said on Wednesday.

Vice President Fuat Oktay said the tariffs were imposed under the principle of reciprocity "in response to the U.S. administration's deliberate attacks on our economy".
