Awareness around aesthetic medicine has grown in recent years, not just in the Middle East, but around the world. The increasing consciousness among consumers regarding their looks and personality is the main contributing factor behind the growth of the medical aesthetics industry across the Middle East and Africa[1]

Preserving the highest level of quality and patient safety is a core priority in Allergan’s overall medical aesthetics commitment in the UAE

United Arab Emirates, Dubai – Allergan, a leading global biopharmaceutical company, announced today the launch of a new global consumer awareness and education campaign. The campaign is focused on the importance of consultation and treatment by trained medical aesthetics professionals for consumers. The new campaign is being launched in the UAE.

The consumer centric initiative is the first in a new international initiative to highlight the growing importance of promoting the highest level of care quality and patient safety for individuals seeking consultation and treatment. It also aims to bridge current misconceptions around medical aesthetics procedures and consumers expectations.

In the United Arab Emirates, consumer awareness of medical aesthetics and treatments is growing rapidly.[2] This increasing consciousness among consumers regarding their looks and personality is the main contributing factor behind the growth of the medical aesthetics industry across the Middle East and Africa. However, there is still a significant portion of the population that is curious about medical aesthetic treatments, but do not go to consultation, for a variety of factors – including lack of awareness about procedures, fear of counterfeit products, or fear of getting treated by an unlicensed or untrained injector. This is reflected in Allergan’s internal data, which shows that there is 42%[3] drop off between those who consider treatment and those who go for consultation in the UAE.

Throughout the campaign, Allergan will bring together aesthetic medicine experts, consumers, academics and representatives from local medical authorities to share ideas, and discuss best practices that aim to help consumers break down barriers toward consultation and boost the UAE medical aesthetics industry.

Ramsey Morad, Allergan’s Vice President for India, Middle East and Africa said, “As a leader in medical aesthetics, we truly have a unique opportunity to be champions for consumers who are interested in medical aesthetic treatments. Demand for products and services is on the rise in the UAE and throughout the region due to the skill, dedication and commitment of aesthetic medicine providers. Our campaign focuses on providing world-class medical and consumer education through a progressive continuum of learning. This means providing consumers with opportunities for engagement around their questions, information and products backed by science so they can make the best-informed medical aesthetics choices possible based on their own individual needs and treatment goals.”

“At Allergan, we are dedicated to accelerating scientific knowledge and technical skills in the fields of facial aesthetics, plastic and regenerative medicine, body contouring, and skin care. Using evidence-based training techniques, our goal is to help providers in the UAE optimize patient outcomes and pursue excellence in practice and patient care,” added Morad.

Dr. Maurico De Maio, worldwide innovator in medical aesthetics and education, one of the world’s leading plastic surgeons, and developer of the MD CodesTM said, “It is of paramount importance for consumers to have a thorough consultation to achieve the look they desire. Good cosmetic physicians need to be more than just injectors. They need to be experts. Technological advances have helped drive stronger results and better patient outcomes. For example, the MD CodesTM were developed as a new language in facial aesthetics to help physicians accurately read the messages of the face and develop the best possible treatment. They help cosmetic physicians recognize how areas of the face are directly linked to certain emotional attributes, and identify the right treatment points and techniques that will deliver effective and natural-looking results by focusing on how people want to feel post-treatment. The awareness campaign helps boost education around fully understanding the medical aesthetics practice.”

In addition, Dr. Jeehan Abdul Qadir Specialist Dermatologist and Chairperson of American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Hospital also noted: “It is important to drive similar consumer awareness initiatives that shed light on the importance of medical aesthetics. We believe that healthcare practitioners have a critical role to expand consumers’ knowledge and overall awareness of medical aesthetics procedures, but also to help them make the right choices for them through appropriate consultation. Our mission is to provide evidence-based applications, safe practices and methodological guidelines to ensure an ethical and accurate representation of the aesthetic medical specialty by working with key partners such as Allergan to implement best practices across the UAE. awareness events and campaigns for the practitioner and the consumer about the copy and fake products that are unfortunately commonplace in the aesthetic industry, hopefully by drawing the attention to the fake products, this issue will decrease”

Marc Princen, Executive Vice President and President, International Commercial at Allergan said, “As consumers across the globe are devoting more attention to their appearance, it is demanding faster innovation as well as high-quality techniques and diligence from healthcare practitioners so that quality of care is not compromised. The UAE has one of the highest ratios of plastic surgeons per capita in the world[4] and is therefore a key market for us to launch this awareness campaign. We hope to replicate the awareness program in other global markets over the coming months.”

Globally, the medical aesthetics industry is expected to reach $73 billion by the year 2022, with Dubai being one of the promising cities for the sector.[5] Following the success of the campaign in the UAE, the initiative will roll out in other global markets, including the United Kingdom and China.
