UAE-based Emirates airline has cancelled at least four flights between Dubai and Bahrain on February 25 and 26 after Bahrain's Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) suspended all flights to and from Dubai and Sharjah airports on coronavirus fears.

The affected flights are EK837/838, EK839/840,  EK833/834, EK835/836, the airline said on its official Twitter account.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bahrain’s national carrier, Gulf Air, issued a statement that it has temporarily ceased flights between the airports for 48 hours.

“The national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain confirms that it is complying with the Civil Aviation Affairs order to temporarily suspend flights to and from Dubai International for 48 hours,” the airline said in a statement.

The Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reported that the 48-hour suspension also covers flights to and from Sharjah International Airport.

Bahrain has at least two coronavirus cases so far. Last Friday, the UAE registered two new cases, bringing the total number of people who contracted the virus in the country to 11.

According to the latest data, the total number of people infected globally has surged past the 80,000 mark, with the majority in mainland China. The death toll has climbed to more than 2,600 worldwide.

The CAA said that all arrivals to Bahrain International Airport suspected of infection will be tested, and if found suffering from coronavirus symptoms will be immediately transferred to designated centres for isolation and treatment.

“The CAA urges all citizens and residents of Bahrain who are currently in areas affected by the Coronavirus (COVID- 19) and who were planning to return to the Kingdom of Bahrain to call the following number +973 17227555,” it added.

“The CAA affirms that it is cooperating with all authorities to take the necessary measures in light of COVID-19,” Bahrain’s state news agency said.
