MANAMA: Bahrain exported $50 million worth of blue crabs in the past five years to South Korea, considered a ‘delicacy’ there, according to a top diplomat.

Last year alone, the exports amounted to $11.5m, ranking it on top of the list of products traded, said new South Korean Ambassador to Bahrain Hae Kwan Chung.

Speaking to the GDN in his first exclusive interview to a media outlet in the kingdom, he added that the annual trade volume between the two nations last year amounted to $800m.

“It has been increasing every year, from $686m in 2015,” he added.

“Also, Bahrain has a significant trade surplus, with imports worth $288m and $513m worth of exports.

“The main products imported from Korea are power equipment, including wire and transformers, automobiles and steel products.

“Exports from Bahrain include naphtha, petrochemical materials and aluminium.

“Interestingly, Bahraini blue crabs are among the high-rankers, worth $11.5m.”

Named after its sapphire-tinted claws, the 10-legged crustaceans have a spotted brownish colour shell. Large males can reach nine inches in shell width and mature females have red highlights on the tips of their claws. They are cherished for their sweet, tender meat and are among the most heavily harvested creatures on the planet.

“They (Bahraini blue crabs) are a delicacy in my country and rank among the top 10 products that are exported from Bahrain,” said Mr Chung.

“It is renowned for its taste and exported as processed meat or sauces.”
