The Saudi ministry of transport has banned 22 contractors from competing in future projects for failing to deliver the projects they have already been contracted to execute on time, the ministry confirmed to Zawya by phone.

The ministry will withdraw projects from contractors if they do not complete projects on time and up to the proper standards, Saad Alkhalbi, Deputy Minister of Transport, said during a workshop in the kingdom, according to local media.

Alkhalbi confirmed that the ministry also plans to privatise some transport sector projects, including roads, railways, ports and aviation.

Earlier this week, the ministry announced that it had completed several road projects worth more than 4 billion Saudi riyals ($1.07 billion) across different parts of the kingdom so far this year.

These included 108 kilometres (km) of highways, 907km of double roads, 659km of single roads, 809km of agricultural roads, 35 upper intersections and one tunnel project.

Saudi Arabia yesterday appointed a new transport minister, Nabeel al-Amudi, replacing Sulaiman Al-Hamdan, in a royal decree.

Last month, the kingdom announced that it would allow women to drive - a move set to draw massive changes to the transport sector.
