Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi participates in GITEX 2018 to present its Sorbonne University Atmospheric Forecasting System (SUAFS) initiative, an integrated combination of advanced models able to provide detailed weather desert forecasts on various temporal scales over the Arabian Peninsula and UAE areas. The university’s representatives are available at stand SA21 in Abu Dhabi Pavilion, Sheikh Saeed Hall in Dubai World Trade Center until Thursday 18 October.

Participating in GITEX Technology Week 2018 is an opportunity to display the latest technological experiences and innovative projects, especially for the university’s weather forecasting model, through meeting and sharing innovative ideas with experts from Asia and all over the world and develop the SUAFS project further. The main objective is to provide freely accessible short-term weather forecast for the entire Arabian Peninsula and the UAE.

Mr. Kosmas Pavlopoulos, Professor of Geography and Planning at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, said: “Sorbonne University Atmospheric Forecast (SUAFS) research project is the result of a long-term collaboration, between different research disciplines, with the common objective to study the interaction of the atmosphere, ocean, and earth system in long and short-term weather forecasting. There will be one big challenge for the future which is the creation of a database of long term measurements of paleo-climatic records and monitoring the climate change in UAE and GCC.”

Professor Pavlopoulos added: “The aim of this project is to establish at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi a research and scientific hub of earth observatory that focuses on the UAE and the region. This includes structuring new research proposals, contributing to the public sector, in order to inspire students to help them upgrade the quality of education and produce scientific results and publications in scientific journal and international conferences.”

Prof. K. Pavlopoulos (SUAD) and Assoc. Prof. P. Katsafados (ACDG/HUA) lead SUAFS development and support team. Mr. H. Alkalbani (SUAD) and Dr. R. Job (SUAD) are supporting hardware and software maintenance; Dr. G. Varlas (ACDG/HUA) and Dr. C. Spyrou (ACDG/HUA) have the responsibility of SUAFS operational runs and forecasts validation.
