• Sharjah government entities showcase their digital project and innovative applications

His Excellency Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, visited the Sharjah Pavilion on Monday at the GITEX Technology Week 2019, the most prominent technology event in the UAE and the region, running until October 10.

The Minister was briefed about the services, applications and innovative services that are being offered by the entities of Sharjah Government during the five-day technology exhibition.

H.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Director General of the Sharjah Department of e-Government, said, “The technological advancements offered by the Sharjah Government Pavilion and its innovative digital and electronic services are for the convenience of its customers by employing digital transformation to improve the prosperity for future generations, which is the core of the UAE Vision 2021 and the UAE 2071 Centennial.

Al Qasimi said, “Innovation and technology is a mainstay of Sharjah Government's strategy which is aimed at adopting advanced technologies and embracing digital transformation across all sectors, with the ultimate objective of driving a knowledge-based economy fed by a proven dynamic digital infrastructure that ensures continuous innovation in information technology.”

He added, "Open data is not an exclusive property of anyone. Its deployment is no longer an option, but rather an essential requirement for all those entities determined to forge efficient, game-changing digital solutions.”

He noted that the adoption of open government data among government entities reflects the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in terms of providing a dignified life for citizens, residents and visitors of the Emirate of Sharjah.

A revolutionary range of technology products...

A number of government departments participating in GITEX 2019 under the umbrella of the Sharjah Government's Pavilion are unveiling a range of innovative initiatives and services to support the digital evolution witnessed across the emirate.

The University of Sharjah launched a smart app that facilitates the search for the academic specialisations offered by the University in an easy, seamless manner, linking these majors with potential career opportunities. The app also allows users to search for available employment opportunities matching their academic degrees.

The Sharjah Commerce & Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) launched an AI-enabled chat service with a Virtual Tour Guide. The SCTDA also unveiled an advanced electronic system enabling travel agencies to license their off-road (safari) vehicles. An interactive hotel statistics generating system was also launched.

His Excellency Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, said that the remarkable growth in the number of tourists in the Emirate is due to the great attractiveness enjoyed by Sharjah from the main source markets, where the contribution of the tourism sector in the economy reached 9 per cent.

Al Midfa added: “We are working with our tourism partners on strategic basis to enhance Sharjah’s position as a leading destination for family tourism by offering special packages and offers tailored to families, in addition to improving the tourist experience by providing innovative solutions, in order to develop and enhance the capabilities and potential of tourism through the expansion and development of partnership to promote world-class facilities and effective marketing of cultural and heritage world-class attractions owned by the Emirate.

His Excellency Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of Sharjah Heritage Institute, said: “We are keen to participate in the activities of GITEX Technology Week, within the Sharjah Government Pavilion.”

The Chairman of the Sharjah Heritage Institute pointed out that one of the most distinctive features of the Institute's participation this year is the definition of the Safafa and Teli crafts through the hologram technology in Arabic and English, as this live technology displays to the visitor the stages experienced by the craft, and then moves to show examples of the uses of Safafa and Teli. The Institute's platform has been well received by visitors who are impressed by the innovations it offers to introduce the new generation to heritage, crafts and heritage professions that are an important component of national identity and local privacy.

The Sharjah International Commercial Arbitration Centre, known as TAHKEEM, launched a smartphone app to streamline arbitration procedures, respond to all public inquiries and display all laws and regulations relevant to commercial arbitration.

H.E. Ahmed Saleh Al Alechla, Director of Sharjah International Commercial Arbitration Centre (TAHKEEM) said that the smartphone application was designed to facilitate the arbitration process, spread the culture of arbitration among the commercial and industrial circles, and work to know the estimated cost before the arbitration process.

The Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority (SPSA) revealed a number of apps as well. These included an initiative to connect smoke detection systems through the operating room of the Sharjah Civil Defence. The new initiative aims to ensure rapid response in case of fire outbreak in order to reduce injuries and casualties. SPSA also launched its new website where all its services are featured and explained. The Authority also unveiled details about the Salama Preventive Training Institute which is accredited by the Sharjah Executive Council to reduce occupational safety and health risks, and prevent accidents in the work environment by offering distinctive training programs for labourers in the Emirate of Sharjah to focus on the importance of health and safety at the workplace.

The Authority also introduced the implementation of Aman, which is based on a sophisticated and innovative mechanism for the early detection of fire in residential and commercial buildings.

HE Shaikh Khalid bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Prevention and Safety Authority, said: “During its first participation in the exhibition, the Authority launched a number of applications, including the application of safety and how to apply safety application, and the launch of its website, which contributes to achieving the vision of the Authority to reach a safe society, free of all hazards."

He added, "By launching these services, we aim to achieve the strategic objectives of the Authority in reducing risks in the Emirate of Sharjah in particular and the UAE in general, to enhance the quality of life in our emirate."

The Dibba Al-Hisn Municipality launched a Smart Meeting Management System  to organise the proceedings of government and private sectors' meetings, including preparation of minutes of meetings, discussions and recommendations. The system gauges completion rates of tasks and assignments and other relevant details.

Omar Ahmed Bin Yarouf, Director of the Office of the Director-General of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, said: “The application organises the schedule of meetings for the sectors that are looking to meet with us by registering and booking a meeting. It makes the municipality compliant with the Sharjah Government's guidelines of paperless digital transactions."

The Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park) unveiled technological projects in collaboration with a wide range of international companies working in modern technologies and vital sectors such as transportation, construction, 3D printing, agriculture, energy, and other technologies that facilitate the lives of mankind.

Hussain Mohamed Al Mahmoudi, Chief Executive Officer, said: “Sharjah Innovation Park looks forward to transferring and localising knowledge of all its details and future technical applications by providing a proactive and supportive environment for experiments and research in the field of future technologies, based on Sharjah's strategic location and advanced infrastructure. In addition, logistics, incentives and facilities make it one of the preferred destinations for investment in research, technology and innovation.”
