Twenty vending machines have been installed across all the four governorates to dispense garbage bags.

Bahrainis are entitled to free, sealable rubbish bags and citizens only need to enter their CPR number and Electricity and Water Authority account number to receive a packet of 30.

The new initiative eliminates the need for people to queue up in person at special service centres for the bags, according to Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf.

“The ministry started installing these machines which arrived in Bahrain recently, and meet the specifications and designs required,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“We started placing the devices in some commercial complexes in the various governorates.”

The minister added that the manual distribution of garbage bag rolls will stop once the vending machines become popular, until such time the bag distribution centres in municipalities will remain open.

On August 1, the GDN had quoted Southern Municipality director general Assem Abullatif as saying that since the machines were installed in the governorate in 2019, around 130,000 people had used them.

The project was the brainchild of Muneera Janahi, an engineer at the municipality, who found that people had to visit the municipality offices during working hours and wait in long queues, causing a great deal of inconvenience.
