MANAMA: An urgent proposal to increase the speed limit on King Hamad Highway from 80km per hour to 100kmph on the part between the flyover and Askar’s north entrance was been presented yesterday.

The proposal, by five MPs, is spearheaded by National Action Charter Bloc president and Parliament’s defence, foreign affairs and national security committee chairman Mohammed Al Sissi.

“The massive highway expansion has just been completed, but the speed limits vary. There’s no logical justification for this,” said Mr Al Sissi.

“It starts with 100kmph, drops to 80kmph and then shoots up to 120kmph.“

The area where the speed is supposed to drop to 80kmph doesn’t have services or industries around. The limit here should be increased to 100kmph.

The speed variation is not only creating confusion but also contributing to accidents.

The proposal has been submitted to Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal for inclusion in tomorrow’s session.
