A Shura Council member yesterday praised the flexi work permit system, saying it cleared the chaos caused by illegal workers.

Fouad Al Haji said there were few illegal workers in the market, while the government has a database of workers licensed under flexi work permits. He was commenting on a reply on the system by Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan during the chamber’s weekly session.

“We are in a better position from when we were 25 years ago when illegal workers took work from businesses,” said Mr Al Haji.

“The flexi work permit system is a pioneering approach to what was a huge chaotic problem and others in the Gulf are following our lead.”

The minister said 56,906 flexi work permits were issued to expats from the launch of the system in 2017 until December last year.
