Muscat - Oman’s first coal-fired independent power project (IPP) with a generation capacity of 1,200MW will be established in Duqm, according to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP).

OPWP on Sunday issued a request for qualification (RfQ) tender inviting developers to submit their statements of qualification for a new clean coal independent power project at Duqm.

‘In line with Oman’s vision to diversify fuel sources, OPWP is planning to develop a clean coal-fired independent power project. The project is planned to have a capacity of 1,200MW and to be located at Duqm,’ OPWP said in a statement on its website.

It said this coal-fired power project will be developed as a private sector project by appropriately qualified developers.

The RfQ tender document is available for purchase from the offices of OPWP from Sunday until April 24. The deadline for submission of the statements of qualification is June 7.

OPWP, a member of Nama Group, is responsible for procuring new capacity for power and water and for purchasing and selling the output in the sultanate.
