AMMAN — The Ministry of Water and Irrigation and Arab Towers Contracting Company signed an agreement on Thursday worth 79.46 million euros for the design and implementation of a wastewater treatment plant in the Ghabawi region.

The project will be jointly financed, with a 41.3-million-euro loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and a 30-million-euro grant from the European Union, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The ministry also signed a $1.24 million supervision agreement with Engicon, and CDM Smith Europe, funded by a grant from the EBRD.

Under the two agreements, the Water Authority will build a treatment plant with a daily capacity of 24.750 cubic metres, which will have sewage tanks instead of the primary type of treatment plant equipment in the Ain Ghazal region.

The project will help reduce traffic congestion and odors in the Ain Ghazal region, improving the area's environmental conditions and reducing the biological load on the Khirbet Samra treatment plant.

The project was submitted by the government to the 2019 London Conference, and won the EBRD’s bronze global award for sustainable projects.

Water and Irrigation Minister Engineer Mohammad Najjar said that the sewage treatment plant in Ghabawi will be constructed in an area far from residents and able to be accessed by all regions.
