Iraq’s Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhibis Al-Saadawi has announced the inclusion of Baghdad Elevated Train (BET) project in the ministry's 2023 budget, a ministry spokesperson said.

Spokesperson Hussein Jalil Al-Khafajia told Zawya Projects that Minister confirmed BET’s [also called Baghdad Metro] inclusion during a meeting with Chinese ambassador to Iraq. He said the project is awaiting the approval of the Parliament, and an announcement on the same is anticipated in the first quarter of 2023.

Al-Khafajia said work on BET, which comprises 14 stations with a total length of 31 kilometres, is due to start in the next two years.

"There are plans to expand the line outside the city of Baghdad, and it may reach more than 50 kilometres,” he said.
