Iraq and Jordan have invited bids for the construction of a joint border economic zone approved by the two neighbours in 2022, an Iraqi news network reported on Monday.

The contract involves “preparing project studies and designs as well as providing funding, operation of the city and promoting projects in its,” Shafaq News said.

The network said tenders were issued on Sunday and the project, with an area of around 50 square kilometres, is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

“A joint Iraq-Jordan venture overseeing the project invited bids on Sunday...only international companies with experience in free economic or industrial zones can bid.”

The agency quoted the two countries’ industry ministers as saying in a joint statement that the project “will contribute to attracting investment in various sectors and boosting cooperation between Iraq and Jordan.”
