Engineering University welcomes GCC high school students to three-day competition.
DOHA, QATAR -- Texas A&M University at Qatar welcomed 11th grade students from the GCC, Yemen and Iraq to a three-day GCC-wide Math Olympiad last week. The event, held at the Texas A&M Engineering Building, was organized by the University's Office of Student and Community Relations (OSCR) in partnership with Omar Bin Al-Khattab Educational Complex for Boys (OBK). The competition was attended by school administration representatives, counselors and embassy Cultural Attaches from participating countries.
Three to five students from each country sat for a math examination administered over two days with awards distributed the third day. The visit included day trips to sites around Doha such as Katara Cultural Village, Aspire and The Pearl, as well as Education City campus tours.
Mariam Al-Mannaie, director of Texas A&M at Qatar's OSCR, spoke at the event's awards ceremony, saying, "I would like to thank all of the GCC participants in this year's Math Olympiad. We had many students from neighboring countries and I would like to congratulate them on their exceptional efforts. I would especially like to congratulate our top three students and winners of the Dean's Award, all from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our goal was to bring GCC students closer to each other to learn together at Education City. I also would like to thank the Cultural Attaches who attended and school supervisors who accompanied students to this education event and who worked closely with us in order to make this event a success. Omar Bin Al-Khattab school also did a great job in helping with the organization of this event."
Winners of the 2011 GCC Math Olympiad were Wael Hussain Al-Saeed, first place; AlYazeed Ibrahim Pasuni, second place; and Saud Abdulaziz Sufayan, third place. Al-Saeed was also granted the Dean's Award for his outstanding math competition performance. All are from Saudi Arabia.
OBK Principal, Ali Al-Maraghi, remarked on the community development aspect of the event, saying, "It is very important at OBK to ensure students succeed academically, but it is also imperative that they are well-rounded, accepting of others and morally and ethically responsible in order to achieve lifelong prosperity. The cooperation between OBK and Texas A&M at Qatar is the result of the mutual goal of serving the community not only in Qatar, but in the region, and our intention to make known the importance of mathematics. Thus, we have collaborated once again to organize the second GCC Math Olympiad. I thank Texas A&M at Qatar for its ongoing support of such endeavors and of OBK students. I also thank all of the countries that have participated in this educational event and allowed their students to learn about the State of Qatar."
