• The tunnel reduces the time of goods and vehicle movement and promote investment in Sinai Peninsula

Cairo: – Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting and connected lighting solutions for remote monitoring and control, announced installing LED lighting in the recently inaugurated Ahmed Hamdy 2 Tunnel. Signify used the latest lighting systems that match international specifications to enable remote control of lighting while delivering up to 70% energy savings.

Signify installed all lighting units and control devices, as well as a full range of supply, monitoring, operation, programming, and start-up services in both directions of the 4,250-meter-long tunnel, which runs underneath the Suez Canal. It is one of six major tunnels recently inaugurated in the port cities of Ismailia, Port Said, and Suez as part of a national megaproject aimed at developing an international industrial and logistics hub in the area around the canal to attract investment and boost the country’s economic growth.

Karim Mosaad, Commercial director in Egypt, North and East Africa, said: “The Ahmed Hamdy 2 Tunnel, which was recently inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is significantly important as it is part of the biggest tunnel project in Egypt and Africa. Some 5,000 engineers and technicians along with four massive drilling machines were able to complete construction in one year only – 30% less than the time frame set by experts. The new tunnel, north of the old Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel will ease traffic in and out of the Sinai Peninsula and cut the time needed for goods to transit across the Suez Canal, thus playing a key role in the broader strategy of promoting investment, stimulating economic development, and enhancing the life of Egyptians on both banks of the canal.” The new connected lighting system installed by Signify can reduce energy use at the tunnel by up to 70%, improving performance while reducing operational costs, downtime, and CO2 emissions. It can minimize maintenance costs, optimize safety, and promote sustainability.

The intelligent LED lighting helps keep motorists safe by maximizing visibility, safety and ensuring a great driver experience along the length of the tunnel. The exceptional colour rendering enhances vision and perception, while the uniform white LED light improves driver comfort and ensures safe passage.

The connected system meets the highest tunnel safety standards to improve driver safety, keep traffic flowing with lighting that meets the latest guidelines for guidance lighting, as well as reduce accidents and tunnel closures.

Signify had recently participated in many huge national projects, including lighting equipment for four other tunnels in Port Said and Ismailia, as well as the facades of Misr Railway Station in Alexandria, and several sports venues in Cairo, Giza, and the New Administrative Capital, amongst other projects.
