The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has accredited the first bachelor level surveying related degree programme in the region. Offered by the Military Technological College (MTC), Oman, the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying programme is a three-year, full time degree, with its first batch of students graduating in December 2018.
Graduates from MTC, who will have this RICS-accredited degree, will now be able to enrol on the Chartered Surveyor Assessment of Professional Competence and qualify after two-years of structured training experience gained whilst in the workplace.
“Achieving RICS accreditation in time with the first graduation of the QS programme is a significant milestone in achieving the vision of MTC to be internationally positioned amongst the best all-service providers of academic and technological education. It is an incentive for us to keep on top of our business and continue the good practice. It also encourages our QS staff to further develop their involvement with RICS activities, RICS CPD events and most importantly to achieve the RICS’ Chartered Surveyor status. Moreover, this RICS accreditation is a tangible evidence in assuring our main client, the Ministry of Defence (MOD), of the quality of the QS graduates they are receiving from MTC.” – Dr Atef Badr, Head of Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying (CE&QS) Department, MTC.
The QS programme falls under the Civil Engineering department, with two other majors; Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Management. It has been designed in line with programme specification of BSc (Hons.) Quantity Surveying degrees awarded by UK universities, with the content being designed to meet local requirements. It has been validated by the University of Portsmouth in the UK.
“The accreditation of MTC QS course is a fantastic landmark achievement. A lot of hard work by the MTC team has been rewarded with the first QS accredited course in the GCC. This will hopefully lead to students in Oman being able to study at home and improve the level of graduates entering the market and in turn bring a pipeline of highly qualified graduates into the Omani workforce.” – Kevin Ellis, Chair of RICS Oman Board
Prior to 2017, RICS had only accredited postgraduate programmes in the Middle East and North Africa region and these were principally offered by universities as distance-learning programmes. Accrediting local programmes, such as the undergraduate Quantity Surveying degree provided by MTC, is a new model for this region. RICS would like to see this model on a much wider basis, as it helps ensure professionals graduating in the region can join the workplace having acquired the right skills and competencies through academia.
