During the 3rd FTTX Megna Summit in Dubai, October 3rd to October 4th, Huawei emphasized the role and importance of FTTX as a national sustainability and competitiveness imperative. Huawei highlighted that its SingleFAN solutions simplify network architecture for FTTX deployment in the Middle East, together with fiber management tools to locate fault systems effectively.
"We have successfully deployed FTTX in over 85 operator networks globally including 6 from the top 10 worldwide operators." said Tony Huang, Director, CTO Office for the Middle East, Huawei. "To be successful in strategic transformation, the operator's challenge is to embrace a unified network which encompasses their growing and diversified services. Our SingleFan technology is the key to providing this unique single platform to operators for reduced network costs and increased profitability and competitiveness."
One of the key drivers for FTTX deployment is the high demands from new applications that require fast connections and bandwidth from web surfing, video conferencing, VOD, file sharing, streaming gaming amongst a number of data driven applications. Operators recognize that true broadband is the solution to both growth and cost reduction. FTTX also enhances the operator's image through investment in advanced technologies which creates a competitive edge. Governments are playing important roles in accelerating FTTX deployment to advance the e-City and e-Society in the new Knowledge Era. With FTTX as the catalyst, the growth of e-governments, e-health and e-education are already creating the future connected society now
"In order for operators to succeed in FTTX deployment, the right business strategies need to be adopted and plan a professional strategic network design for speedy ROI and informed foresight. New services need to be deployed stage by stage based on market acceptance and maturity depending on the whether they are traditional services or new emerging IP-based services. IPTV, online storage and e-health are some of the examples. Huawei is focused on supporting Operators in the migration from DSL to FTTX." added Huang. "From a consumer perspective, operators will be presenting the new services in bundles for best values once the brand image and awareness of FTTX is established in the market. To overcome FTTX business pressures, new business models are emerging and operators need to realize and respond to the right business model for them to maximize on profitability. From a technical and engineering perspective, developing ways to speed up the process of transformation is a must. Vendors like Huawei provide strong delivering capabilities to reduce time-to-market to deliver the ultimate FTTX product to its operators."
In the UAE, Huawei has demonstrated provision of customized solutions and applications to increase competitiveness. Huawei built a large-scale commercial (FTTH) network in the United Arab Emirates with Etisalat recently. The GPON FTTH network provides ultra high speed connection for families and businesses. With investment by Etisalat, together with the support of the TRA, for the rollout of FTTH across the country, Abu Dhabi is slated as the first capital in the world to be truly connected.
In the Middle East, Huawei is working closely with Qtel to transform Qatar into an ever-advancing country capable of sustaining its own development and providing high standards of living for its people by 2030. Responding to Qatar's request for the country's 1st FTTH trial for its Masaieed Industrial City with 2000 homes, Huawei demonstrated services including HD IPTV to Qtel in August with a downlink speed up to 93.5Mbps. In September 2010, Qtel awarded Qatar NGNB contracts to Huawei.
"By 2013, 300 Million new fixed broadband users will be added globally, doubling today's total, and through the deployment of FTTX, they will have access to massive amounts of data realizing the e-societies of the future. The availability of this broadband will allow "3 Screen" (TV, PC and mobile handset) convergence with exciting opportunities for always-on networking." concludes Huang.
