Abu Dhabi, UAE - March 21, 2013
The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT)'s Ruwais Colleges and Shell today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under which Shell will support engineering students in building an ultra fuel-efficient "made in the UAE" car, enabling them to compete at the 2013 global Shell Eco-marathon challenge. They will join other UAE and regional universities at the innovation driven challenge taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 2013.
The MOU was signed by Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology and John Barry Shell Abu Dhabi Country Chair, in the presence of other executives from HCT, Ruwais Colleges and Shell.
"Shell's Eco-marathon campaign is a unique opportunity which enables our students and future UAE leaders to apply their engineering and project management experience to a real time project with global implications. Developing a fuel-efficient car locally gives our students a platform through which they can impact the future of energy. We would like to thank Shell for its efforts in bringing this challenge to the region and we are looking forward to our growing UAE teams' participation," said Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of the HCT.
"We are very pleased to support the Ruwais Colleges team's participation in our 2013 program. Providing UAE nationals with an opportunity to apply their engineering skills to conceptualize and produce energy efficiency cars encourages understanding about the future of innovation and smarter mobility. These students will be given the opportunity to apply the skills gained through this program to the development of their country become future contributors to the economy of the UAE. We wish the students the best of luck at the global event in Kuala Lumpur in July ." said John Barry.

About Shell Eco-marathon
The Shell Eco-marathon has been running for the last 28 years and takes place each year in Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific and challenges more than 5000 students of top universities to design and build energy efficient vehicles. The most fuel-efficient driving car ever designed by a Shell Eco-marathon student team was capable of driving 4,896.1 kilometers on a single liter of fuel - the equivalent of driving from UAE to Germany. This was achieved by a French university during the 2010 Shell Eco-marathon in Europe.
Vehicles in the Shell Eco-marathon can use any conventionally available energy source including fuels such as diesel, gasoline and Gas-to-Liquids (GTL), as well as alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ethanol, solar and battery electric. Teams can enter vehicles in two categories, the 'Prototypes' group where the primary design consideration is reducing drag and maximizing efficiency, and the 'UrbanConcept' which focuses on design that is contemporary, but still focusing on fuel efficiency.
