Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Community members and those interested in the field of innovation can visit the DHA stand at UAE innovates or the DHA’s Innovation Centre as DHA celebrates UAE Innovation Month 2020.
Mai Al Dossari, Director of Health Innovation Centre at DHA says, “Innovation in the field of healthcare is particularly important because it can directly improve patient care, outcomes and enhance patient convenience. At the same, it can lead to better efficiencies and reduced costs in the healthcare sector.
“At the Innovation Centre, one of our recent achievements we are proud of is a full-fledged 3D printing lab. So far, we have already provided more than fifteen 3D printed models to surgeons at DHA hospitals who requested for patient specific anatomical models allowing them to conduct detailed pre-operative analysis.
“The 3D Lab has supported DHA’s surgeons across various specialties. DHA’s maxillofacial surgeons used 3D models of patients’ jaws and skulls for visual reference during surgery and intra-operative monitoring in certain complex cases.
“The Cardiology team at Rashid Hospital used 3D models to pre-operatively plan and test the fitting of Trans Aortic Valve Implants. Hatta Hospital’s Orthopedics department has used patient specific 3D printed models of knees and shoulders to enhance planning for complex reconstruction surgeries.”
In addition to the 3D printing lab, the DHA will also discuss its plans to include robotic surgeries for orthopedic cases such as fractures of spinal cord and for brain strokes.
During the 5-day event, DHA will discuss various topics with esteemed speakers. These include discussions on AI in healthcare, the journey from an idea to start-up. The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) was created, in June 2007, by Law 13 issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, with an expanded vision to include strategic oversight for the complete health sector in Dubai and enhance private sector engagement.
Prior to the establishment of the DHA, the Department of Health and Medical Services, which was established in 1973, was the functioning authority that almost exclusively focused on health service delivery.
In May 2018, H.H Sheikh Mohammed, issued Law No. (6) of 2018 of the DHA. The new Law further enables the DHA to achieve its objectives including regulating medical services in Dubai, enhancing competiveness and transparency, improving medical services and products based on international best practices and achieving the sector’s objectives according to approved strategic plans.
H.H Sheikh Mohammed also issued Decree No. 17 of 2018 establishing subsidiaries of the DHA: the Dubai Healthcare Corporation and Dubai Health Insurance Corporation to further enhance healthcare services in Dubai and enable DHA to fulfil its responsibilities and obligations.
Three new strategic sectors were also added as part of the decree; they include Strategy and Corporate Development, Health Regulation, and Shared Support Services.
In addition to overseeing the health sector for the Emirate of Dubai, the DHA also focuses on providing services through DHA healthcare facilities including Latifa, Dubai, Rashid and Hatta Hospitals, its 12 primary healthcare centers, 17 medical fitness centers and its 6 specialty centers.
