The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has trained 114 people from 38 different nationalities in the first half of 2006 to become professional tour guides.
From January to July, six Dubai Tour Guide Award (DTGA) courses were conducted by the DTCM where the participants were trained to become successful tour guides, contributing to Dubai's booming hospitality industry.
On successful completion of the 10-day courses, the participants became DTCM- accredited Tour Guides. The DTCM launched the DTGA six years ago with the aim of providing an outstanding experience to Dubai's visitors and to improve the quality of customer service in Dubai.
The participants were drawn from different nationalities including German, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Iranian, Finnish, Estonia, Lebanese, Egyptian, Japanese and Austrian. The tour guides included 10 UAE nationals.
The participants were given theoretical as well as practical knowledge regarding different aspects of Dubai, including general tourism, economic progress, infrastructure development projects and tourist attractions. First Aid Training also formed an important part of the course.
Mr. Ibrahim Yaqoot, DTCM Manager Human Resources, said: "The participants of the course gained invaluable knowledge of Dubai so that they can create a better awareness of our history, culture and traditions. They have also learnt about the boom in real estate projects that are currently under progress."
Participants were taken on a tour of the historical and other tourist attractions including the Gold Souk, Dubai Museum, Al Ahmadiah School and Al Shindagha heritage sites.
