The heart and lung transplant center will have a multi-disciplinary team led by Dr. Sandeep Attawar, Chair and Director of KIMS Institute for Heart and Lung Transplantation

Abu Dhabi: A highly-accomplished team of medics from India and the UAE will team up to establish a multi-organ transplant center in Abu Dhabi. The center would be the second such facility in the emirate and benefit many patients waiting for the organ transplant in the UAE.

The organ transplant center will be based at Burjeel Medical City – VPS Healthcare’s premium hospital at Mohammed Bin Zayed City. The center will have a multi-disciplinary team led by Dr. Sandeep Attawar, Chair and Director of KIMS Institute for Heart and Lung Transplantation in Hyderabad, India.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up the medical collaboration was signed here by John Sunil, CEO of Burjeel Hospitals, and Dr. Sandeep Attawar, Chair and Director of KIMS Institute for Heart and Lung Transplantation, KIMS Hospital.

As per the agreement, Burjeel Medical City will set up a state-of-the-art organ transplant center with advanced technology and equipment for diagnosis, treatment, and care. While KIMS Hospital will support by sharing their medical expertise and knowledge in treating the patients.

Dr Attawar’s team will be introducing all programs with regards to heart and liver transplantation, including LVAD. The center will facilitate all its expertise and resources to identifying and serving the deserved patients. High-risk surgeries and invasive management of structural heart diseases will be a cornerstone of this partnership. In addition to this, the collaboration will set up a first of its kind department that would singularly deal with the management of heart failures in children.

The medical team led by Dr. Sandeep, who is also the founding director of the Solid Thoracic Organ TX Program at KIMS Hospitals, has successfully performed almost 280 thoracic organ transplants, including 160 double lung transplants, 88 heart transplants, and 32 combined Heart & Lung transplants.

The team has also performed around 12 double lung transplants on patients with end-stage COVID-19-damaged lungs. This is arguably the highest number of successful double lung transplants for this emerging disease in Asia.

“The partnership between Burjeel Medical City and KIMS Hospitals would bring in a transformational change and would equip us to provide relief to patients waiting for an organ transplant in the UAE. In the initial phase, we will be concentrating on setting up the infrastructure for heart and lung transplants. Soon, we will strengthen our organ transplant center and open directly to patients in need. We aim to provide the most advanced care to patients in the UAE and other GCC countries. We hope this collaboration between the entities would help us in serving the purpose,” said John Sunil, CEO of Burjeel Hospitals.

Dr. Sandeep Attawar, Chair and Director of KIMS Institute for Heart and Lung Transplantation, KIMS Hospital, said: “We are proud to collaborate with Burjeel Medical City to set up a heart and lung transplant center at the hospital. We will be supporting Burjeel Medical City by extending our expertise in multi-organ transplants. Our team at KIMS has recently conducted 12 Covid Double lung transplants in Hyderabad and has successfully conducted hundreds of other organ transplant cases. We firmly believe and look forward to serving the patients in the UAE through this partnership and translate this opportunity for the overall benefit of the health sector in the Middle East.”

The establishment of a multi-organ transplant center at Burjeel Medical City will strengthen UAE's healthcare ecosystem. It would significantly contribute to transforming the nation as a hub for medical tourism.
