The meteorological directorate at the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry yesterday confirmed that Bahrain had indeed been hit by an earthquake.

The directorate had initially, on Monday, denied social media reports that the kingdom had been rocked by an earthquake.

However, in a statement yesterday it confirmed on its social media account that the tremor had been felt in Bahrain after the Geological Survery Authority in Saudi Arabia recorded a 3.01 earthquake in Bahrain at 6.06am on Monday.

Many people had taken to social media early Monday morning to report about the earthquake with a hashtag on Twitter attracting more than 1,500 comments.

The directorate said it had initially denied the reports after investigating through the seismic monitoring system, as well as the system network that is connected to the seismic monitoring systems of the UAE, Oman and Kuwait.

“The directorate issued statements on social media accounts denying reports about any seismic activity,” said a statement yesterday.

“This was after the seismology team also checked the European and US seismology centres to further verify, and no information was found at these centres that reported an earthquake in Bahrain.

“The Geological Survey Authority in Saudi Arabia verified it recorded an earthquake in Bahrain at 06.06am on Monday with a strength of 3.01 on the Richter scale and with a depth of 3.55km.

“Based on this new information, the directorate issued an amended statement on the same day on its social media accounts to inform the public about the details of the earthquake that had been felt by some citizens.”
