Doha: 2.62 million people in Qatar –96.8% of the total population— are active social media users, as revealed by online reference library DataReportal.

According to the report, 2.68 million internet users were accounted for in Qatar in January 2023, with an internet penetration rate that stood at 99% at the start of this year.

The 1% of people who remained offline at the beginning of 2023 accounted for 27.1 thousand out of the total population.

DataReportal stated that 97.8 percent of the country’s total internet user base has used at least one social media platform in January 2023.

Online social platforms that people residing in Qatar frequented the most were YouTube (2.62 million users), TikTok (2.14 million users), Facebook (1.95 million), Instagram (1.40 million), LinkedIn (1.20 million), Twitter (1.05 million), and Snapchat (975,000).

While some of the aforementioned social media platforms’ potential advertisement reach has witnessed growth in Qatar, user growth for all of Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Youtube has decreased, with Facebook and Instagram losing around 150 and 100 thousand users respectively.

Meanwhile, LinkedIn, Twitter and TikTok reported increased growth between the start of 2022 and early 2023, with each amassing 200, 431, and 602 thousand users respectively.

ByteDance, the internet technology company that owns TikTok, indicated that the short video platform’s ads reached 96.5% of all adults aged 18 and above in Qatar at the start of 2023.

Internet speed has also increased in Qatar, as per the report, with a measured 78.08 Mbps increase (over 79.6%) for media mobile internet connection in the twelve months to the start of this year.

Fixed internet connection speeds in Qatar increased by 26.70 Mbps (over 41.6%) during the same period of time as well.

The report also explained that social media use in general was on the rise all over the world.
