Zayed University's Centre for Business Excellence (CBEX) is preparing nine training courses.

The course will be for Finance, Management and Leadership Development, Accounting, Com-munication, Customer Services, Executive and Leadership Development, Human Resources as approved by Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), Management Infor-mation Systems, and Marketing for all the employees in public and private departments within the UAE and the Gulf region.

The courses beginning next February are presented by experts from Zayed University and international universities.

Dr Hanif Hassan, Vice President of Zayed University, said: "The centre seeks to provide short- and long-term courses based on the needs of companies and departments to help develop the performances of employees with the assistance of international experts known for their experiences in their chosen fields. The experts will present lectures and analytical frameworks in the economic fields such as accounting, finance, leadership development, management information systems, marketing and communication."

Indicating the important role of CBEX, Dr Hassan added: "The centre recently organised courses in human resources for a number of companies in Egypt and GCC countries, as well as local departments in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai; in addition to the EMBA programme, which is offered in cooperation with three international universities - University of Kentucky, Clemson University, and Oklahoma State University."

The centre is preparing for the graduation of the first group of EMBA programme in a special celebration to be held under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President of Zayed University, who supports the role of the university's specialised centres and its different departments in the context of its philosophy in serving society and individuals.

Jennifer McGlennon, director of the centre, said: "The short courses submitted by the centre will begin with preparatory courses for CPA and CMA under the supervision of professionally certified faculty experts with doctorates in accounting who would guide students on the most appropriate certification. The duration of the course is once a week for 10 months. The centre is also seeking to obtain the licence of SHRM examination centre to serve UAE and the Gulf region."

The communication course is to be presented by Michael Willemyns, Professor, Queens-land University, Australia.

It will concentrate on two modules: "Productive Power through Communicating Effectively" shows students how to maximise communication skills by using a variety of practical and highly effective communication techniques and strategies; and "Powerful Business Writing" provides the opportunity for participants to address their current use of written communication and learn language, skills and techniques for enhancing written correspondence in the workplace.

The strategies introduced and practiced are designed to give each individual the tools to write more meaningful and effective correspondence, reap the benefits of it and project a more professional image.

The third course which discusses the importance of customer services will be presented by Ondine Hasbani, Assistant Director, CBEX Centre.

The level of service provided for customers is only good if it succeeds in meeting their needs and expectations.

It also identifies individual and organisational barriers to the provisions of good service, and techniques for resolving problematic situations and preventing occurrences.

Both Jennifer McGlennon, Director of the centre, and Norman Crawford, economics expert at Queensland University, Australia, will highlight the importance of executive and leadership development.

The course is divided in two parts: the first one stresses on the development of emotional intelligence; in which participants will learn the framework for emotional intelligence and plan to maximise their workplace performance and effectiveness.

Such development uses business studies to concentrate on domains of excellence, expertise, emotional competency framework, and self-directed changes. In the second part, Dr Richard Mapstone, Member of the European Research Group, will discuss "Effective Negotiation Strategies".

Facing up to differences and resolving conflicts is a crucial aspect of managerial work. The fifth course is on Essential Finance for Managers.

Lectured by Dr Bruce Budd, Expert in Economics and Quantitative Techniques from the University of London. It provides a sound analytical framework that guides managers in making investment and financing decisions.

The main purpose of the course is to present and discuss analytical tools derived from theory and to apply theory to contemporary examples. Mathematical skills are introduced and thoroughly explained, and previous knowledge is not essential. This course also provides an introduction to the basics of financial management.
