Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, an award winning luxury resort, positioned on the shores of the Arabian Sea, has implemented an array of sustainable initiatives to align with Hilton’s commitment to cut its environmental footprint in half by 2030.
Can Collection Day:
In partnership with Emirates Environmental Group, Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah participated in the 25th cycle of the 2021 Can Collection Day initiative, which aims to recycle as many aluminium cans as possible across the seven Emirates. As the UAE collectively progresses towards a sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah managed to contribute a fantastic total of 35 kilos of cans.
Practise your swing and save the fishes:
Guests can now practice their swing whilst helping to promote Ras Al Khaimah’s marine life. At Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah’s costal driving range guests can hit ‘eco golf balls’ into the sea. The golf balls are made up of biodegradable ingredients which dissolve into fish food, helping to support and promote local wildlife. Available daily, the ‘eco golf balls’ can be purchased for AED 15.
Eradication of all plastic bottles:
Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah has implemented an initiative to completely eradicate plastic bottles across the hotel. Plastic bottles have been replaced with reusable glass water bottles, which can be filled from numerous water stations situated across the hotel. Guests can enjoy a variety of chilled water flavoured with fresh fruits and vegetables, served from sustainable glass containers into reusable and eco-friendly cups. The project has reduced the hotel’s plastic waste by up to 5 tons annually over the last two years.
Removal of plastic key cards:
Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah has now removed all plastic hotel key cards collected from the front desk of the hotel and introduced eco-friendly wooden RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) enabled key cards instead. The key cards are made entirely from wood fibre and are fully biodegradable, and the no-lamination construction is chlorine free and tested to be recyclable.
Enjoy natural and locally available authentic ingredients:
Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah places high importance on sourcing ingredients locally, ensuring high-quality meals are produced with wholesome ingredients, whilst benefiting and supporting local producers. Should certain produce be unavailable locally, the ingredients are imported from sustainably managed sources. Furthermore, guests at Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah can enjoy contactless and interactive mobile menus to help limit the amount of paper waste.
Saving energy consumption:
Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah has installed 30nos variable-frequency drives (VFD), helping to control the air speed throughout the property. The new installation now saves 5,000 KWH daily, or approximately 1,825,000 KWH yearly. Moreover, the 1,000-watt light which once illuminated the tennis court has now been replaced with an eco-friendlier 400-watt LED light. The underwater lights in the picturesque swimming pool have also been upgraded to environmentally conscious LED 35-watt bulbs too.
Reducing water consumption:
Water consumption is also at the forefront of Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, with aerators being installed in all guest rooms and public area washrooms. The 1,250 aerators throughout the property save approximately 100 cu m of water per day, averaging out to 36,500 cu m of water annually.
