After Mahdia and Djerba, the city of Sousse, also known as the jewel of the Sahel, recently joined the optimized Mediterranean waste management project (GODEM) that engages in the implementation of pilot projects designed to provide specific answers in terms of prevention, collection and treatment of waste.
Funded by the European Union program of urban and territorial development, "CIUDAD" (Cooperation in Urban Development and Dialogue), the project acts on waste reduction, and development of source separation of collection and recycling, along with the management of urgent situations.
As part of an agreement which will be signed between the city of Sousse and the Belgian Institute of Environmental Management, Sousse will examine the current situation of the collection and transport of garden and construction waste, as well as the layout of controlled dumping grounds, for a total cost of 113,000 dinars.
The Sousse project which is part of four projects in the Mediterranean, will also tap on the previous hotel waste reduction and recycling projects in Mahdia and Djerba to reduce the amount of waste and better master the link with the patterns of supply and sustainable tourism.
